THE FACTS OF LIGHT;; The first thing one should know is that Light is a brilliant actor. He should really go into the field. On the outside, he is charming and polite. He's very intelligent and perceptive, enough to rival the greatest detective in his world, L. He has a very strong sense of justice, and is seen as a very kind, patient and rational human being. His flawless honor student history and career as police detective would likely be enough to dissuade anyone from suspecting him from any wrong-doing.

However, Light has a very deep dark side. He grows bored with the monotony of his life and is later corrupted by the Death Note; driven by his sense of justice, Light is equipped with one of the biggest god complexes imaginable. He is a unique but brutally effective serial killer, and feels no remorse over his actions in the slightest. Though he at first would rather not sacrifice certain people to his plan, if he sees no other way out, he will toss people aside (or bring them into the fold) according to what best suits his plans in the long term, not what any emotion would tell him (this is one of many things that contrasts with his moral code without the Death Note). This includes family, lovers, friends, anyone. He's extremely cautious; secretive, and doesn't do anything that won't benefit his plans in some way. His "Kira" persona has also been called childish, while Light (who's usually well composed) has actually thrown fits akin to tantrums in the rare event he's met with something he's not prepared for.

tl;dr As long as he still holds an obsession with the Death Note, he is conceited, manipulative and not your friend. Even without the death note, he's actually still rather conceited, but without such a clean and perfect medium, he has no real desire to actually kill anyone.
